This reminds me of a trailer for the new Will Smith movie, “After Earth.” One of the lines is: “Danger is very real. Fear is a choice.” This underestimates the power of fear in small doses, like you reference in this post. I subscribe more to your view, like that famous definition of bravery being “what you do in spite of fear, not with the absence of it.”
Yes, Jared, fear is like a pain sensor. Without it, we’d burn ourselves on the stove every time or get burned by people in our interactions with them. I love that quote, in spite of fear, not with the absence…I haven’t heard it before. I do like the movie quote too, though. Fear is a feeling that needs to be controlled.
